Busy Start

BWCN's year got off to a flying start. Or rather, a not-flying start...
We received a call from a gentleman in Belize City who had found a pelican with a broken wing on New Year's Eve.
He managed to capture the bird and got in touch with the zoo, who contacted BWCN bright and early on New Year's Day. Despite the punishments of the 'night before', our intrepid relay team got to work and transported the unfortunate bird to the wildlife clinic. Sadly, he didn't make it - but at least he was warm, comfortable and feeling no pain when he finally slept the Big Sleep.
Following the publication of the BTL press release of the 0800 number launch, we had a flurry of calls ranging from crocs living in storm drains to another injured pelican than no-one could catch.
On January 21st, we were contacted by Audubon Society: a beautiful rare raptor had been shot (oh yes) and needed urgent medical care. The relay team ran this Ornate Hawk Eagle to the Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic, where he is now in the capable hands of Dr Isabelle and is so far responding to treatment. Let’s hope that we are able to return this amazing creature to its home in the wild before too long.

Make note of our numbers, and don’t forget, we are always in need of willing souls to join the relay team. Belize City to Belmopan/Cayo are our most sought-after routes so far, so if you travel the highways regularly, please get in touch with us and we will add you to our call list.
